CHENNAI: August Sculptures, an exhibition of sculptures by 13 artists on display at Apparao Galleries, initiates chirpy and eclectic expressions and angles. Undoubtedly, the varying culture through globalisation influences the artists’ assessment of icons that borders them. And to judge how original an artist is, the viewer needs to know what has happened before or during the time period that an art piece is being created. Dimpy Menon’s collection has three strains — the body in movement, nature and rest. She explores limit in terms of energy. The bronze and granite depictions of seamlessness between man and his environment connect motion in halt. Menon wants her ideas to be shared and not to be hanged in isolation. Her works — Seated figure, and Pensive — not only interacts but also conveys a message. Streaks of romanticism like intimacy and tenderness are portrayed in CSN Patnaik’s woman portrayals with an extravagant feel of drama. He primarily works with bronze on which he adds patina to emphasise the evocativeness in human forms. Patnaik shows woman as a figure of silence and epitome of sacrifice. K George’s conceptual and full figured newspaper skinned sculptures, The dance of life, derives postures which he captured in photographs and then translated them dimensionally. The newspaper skin notes a man’s notion of temperament that ephemerally denotes present tense. Through his works, George questions whether human existence is an illusion or not. He moulds an image in clay that is cast in plaster for non-reusable glass fibers. Then the image is filed and polished. Over the bare skin, the neatly cut rectangular newspapers are fitted. His multiple crossovers convey techniques and his mastery over arts. Nandesh Shanti Prakash’s works surmount myth and reality. Prakash’s figurative maps his own trajectory as an individual in locating himself from his ancestry. His work, Back to earth, engages viewers in a visual, tactile and auditory realm, to bring conversations regarding the relationship between technology and our changing concept of nature and self. The artist expresses his wish to question social and political attitudes pertaining to public welfare.B Srinivasa Reddy’s painted fibre glass sculpture centres human head as the superpower. The set of different heads pose a calm look, rising above the ground to face the world.Priti Kahar says her art pieces do not fall under conventional methods of working. Her work, Black is a black is a black, reminds one of the famous Shakespearean adages, ‘A rose is a rose is a rose’. Her idea focuses on verbal illusions and she enjoys intervening words on the objects that brings playfulness in her works. Niloufer Seth’s Dance-free sculptures come from his undiluted desires and thoughts. Seth sights his clay and oxidised bronze sculptures are poetry in a 3D form and an arrangement of words in a 3D painted form.  BO Shailesh’s explorations deal with his youth discoveries that are subjected to criticisms and various personal interpretations. Shailesh puzzles the viewers with his artistic meanings and symbolisms. Raja Krishnan’s Growth series expresses his fondness towards nature that has ended with his flora and fauna discoveries in bronze. Yuvan’s state of art represents irresistibility and an emotionally depressed mind. He has converted his technical skills into a holistic journey of experience. His colourful glass beads and paper works seek one’s definite attention as it’s a hotchpotch of style and tradition. Shivaramachary’s expressive figurines — External cruise, and Journey — highlight the contrast between the traditional and modern charms. Velmurugan’s iconographic creations accustom one with some of the newer trends in Indian art. Nupur’s bronze works such as Boat and fish, and  Still life pierce his high pitched thinking that engulfs one’s visual power.(The exhibition is on till Aug 31 at Apparao Galleries, Nungambakkam.
