Kolkata: The police on Friday tore up several Maoist posters asking people to boycott the "farcical elections" pasted on the walls of the Presidency College and Coffee House, Kolkata's intellectual hubs.

Maoists have targeted these areas to renew their poll boycott call after failing to elicit response in the West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts of Bengal.

The posters asked people to "boycott the farcical elections, make way for a Maoist movement like Nepal, Andhra

Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar".

The Amherst Street police station sources revealed that the posters

inside the famous Coffee House and Presidency College were put up overnight after shutters were downed on Thursday, a day ahead of the second phase of polling in the state.

Though nobody has been identified, it appeared to be the handiwork of students who support the Naxalites.

Employees of the Coffee House had no clue about who pasted the posters and when.

"There is round-the-clock vigil by the police and the Presidency College guards. And despite this, some unknown

people have put up posters here. We don't know how it could happen," said Amal Sarkar, a nearby book seller.

The police said the matter was under investigation and there was no need to panic.

Coffee House over the years has been frequented by the city's leading

cultural and political personalities.
