BANGALORE: People living in close proximity to Ulsoor Lake are re-establishing the fact that the power still lies in the hands of the people. They organised a protest against the authority’s apathy towards the deterioration that the lake has been facing. A gathering of almost 200 rounded up in the lake to fight for what they believe in.Ulsoor lake, through the years, has proved to be a favourite of all Bangaloreans. Not only is it a walkers’ favourite but also a lake that the MEG sappers themselves worked on cleaning. It has come back from the brink of destruction to represent a symbol of hope. But that lasted only until the festivals of Ganesh Chathurthi and Durga Puja came with all their flourish and pomp to leave it messy again. The immersion effect is still felt in the lake giving it a look of a discarding ground rather than a water body. City Express had published a report titled, ‘Ulsoor lake, immersed in many a worry’ regarding the many grievances that the people faced. Ravi, one of the protesters, said, “It is high time that the concerned authorities realise the problems of the lake. We want to save our lake. And now, the only way we can do that seems to be through protest. It has been more than two months that the festivals got over. It could have been cleaned by now.”The protest was held by the residents’ forum in association with the walkers association of the locality. Ravi further added that, “The lake deserves to be saved. We hope that the authorities realise the importance of the same.”
