CHENNAI: The small community of medical experts who have been practising CT Guided Interventions will now have a huge advantage, thanks to ROBIO. A product launched by Perfint Healthcare Corporation, based in Chennai and Lowell from the USA, this Robotic Targeting system will help in cancer care and pain care. Dr Roy Santosham, Professor of Radiology and Image Sciences at Sri Ramachandra University, who has been administering pain relief for 19 years, says that this device will cut down one important pre-requisite that used to be mandatory back then. “Initially, radiologists needed a certain amount of skill to insert a needle precisely, measure the trajectory that it made toward the nerve and manoeuvre it towards the nerve. Now this device can pinpoint the exact point of precision as well as help with the display.”ROBIO comes with an array of advanced targeting features making it possible for clinicians to perform complex procedures with a high degree of accuracy, minimising unwanted organ damage and with significantly higher patient comfort. An exciting new introduction in this robot is pain care assistance helping clinicians relieve pain almost instantaneously through CT guided Interventions. Santhosham, who is also part of the Indian Academy of CT Guided Interventions said that they were planning to begin training four to five radiologists a year to ply this highly specialised trade, “There are only about 20 people in Chennai who are qualified to do this at present. We need to up those numbers,” he said.Its enhanced workflow make it possible to perform new types of procedures like Image Guided Pain Care and PET-CT guided Biopsies or Ablation. He also explained that it had applications in tumour ablation, an increasingly adopted alternate to surgery, radiation or chemotherapy – particularly liver cancer.
