Azamgarh (UP): Keen to make an entry into the country’s political stage, underworld don Abu Salem’s campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections is receiving a huge public response in Uttar Pradesh.

Salem who is expected to contest as an independent candidate from his hometown Azamgarh is receiving support from different quarters.

"We all stand by Salem no matter what happens. Our party is already there to allot him a ticket to contest. We all stand by him and we believe that he will definitely win in the elections," said Secretary, United Democratic Front (UDF) Ashfaq Ahmed Qureshi.

People in Azamgarh feel that the don, who was extradited from Portugal for being tried in the country’s court for various crimes including his alleged role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, is innocent.

"None of the crimes against him has been proved till now and if he will be guilty we will withdraw our support. But for now, he is our family member and we want him to win in the polls," said Shahid Ali, a local resident.

Azamgarh town, predominantly inhabited by Muslims is world famous for Banarasi sarees, and over 50 per cent of the population earn their livelihood from the weaving industry.

Though Salem had said earlier that his campaign would be a low-profile one, almost all the streets and the walls of the Mubarakpur town in the Azamgarh district has been filled with posters of him.
