A merchant vessel, which was attacked by LTTE off Jaffna peninsula reportedly had seven Indian crews on board.

New Delhi: While the Sri Lankan navy destroyed two LTTE naval boats during a fierce clash in the northern sea on Sunday, LTTE on the other hand rammed an explosives-laden boat against a merchant vessel.

The merchant vessel, which was attacked by LTTE off Jaffna peninsula reportedly had seven Indian crews on board.

Civilian crew including Indians on board are reported to be safe, while three navy sailors were injured in the attack.

Fighting erupted when nearly 20 boats from LTTE's sea wing headed toward the navy-guarded harbor in Point Pedro off the Jaffna peninsula.

A private ship had unloaded cargo and was returning when the flotilla of LTTE boats moved in to possibly attack the vessel off the Jaffna peninsula, military sources said as quoted by PTI.

At least one Tiger craft exploded, damaging the ship while others engaged a naval vessel.

The LTTE website TamilNet confirmed the incident without giving details.
