Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday vehemently demanded the death penalty for Yakub Memon, brother of prime accused Tiger Memon, who was found guilty on September 12 by the designated TADA court, in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case.
Arguing on behalf of the CBI, regarding the quantum of punishment to be awarded to Yakub, CBI counsel C S Sharma argued that the accused had been found guilty under various sections of the TADA, IPC and various other Acts.
In view of the gravity of the offences, Yakub Memon deserves the death penalty, since the serial Mumbai blasts case qualifies to be called a 'rarest of the rare' case, Sharma said.
However, Yakub Memon on Thursday told a TADA court that he was dragged into the case only because he was the brother of prime accused Tiger Memon who is absconding.
Yakub said Tiger was a non-resident Indian and used to come to India to stay with him and his family. Yakub said he used to go to Dubai for business purposes and that he and Tiger were busy in their respective business careers.
Denying that he was close to Tiger, Yakub said although they were blood relatives, there was not much affection between them.
He also denied having financed the 1993 blasts by making payments to the co-accused through Moolchand Shah and a business firm.
