It was a glorious morning to celebrate, as 1,500 children from various schools in the city, including the differently-abled, participated in a fun fair.

With the theme ‘Corporate Committment’, the event organised by the Shakti Foundation took place on the St George’s Anglo Indian School grounds.

The differently-abled kept up with the rest of the students from the city and marched with gusto in what turned out to be one of the happiest occasions for them to showcase their talents.

Popular percussionist and drummer extraordinaire Sivamani, who has been a volunteer at the Shakti Foundation for over 10 years, joined a budding drummer on stage and together, they whipped the audience into a frenzy with their beats. He followed it up with a solo performance, saluting the determination of the differently-abled. “I have seen so many enthusiastic children, but none as enthusiastic as these kids. We’re always here with our music and if sharing it with them helps, then why not?” said Sivamani.

Earlier, the differently-abled children put up a talent show to the cheer and whistles of the audience to their music and dancing. The students, vibrantly dressed, performed to the best of their abilities on the stage.

Vasanthalakshmi Raghuvir, one of the founders of the Shakti Foundation, told City Express that it was a day of inclusion. “The differently abled are not able to integrate themselves into mainstream life. It’s not that they are kept out, but it’s the lack of access that makes it so. So, we thought this day could be a day of commemoration, a day to include them in our everyday life,” she said.

Vikar Singh, CEO of Bharti Airtel for Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Anand Krishna, Information Officer at the US Consulate General, Chennai, Raman Govindarajan, Chairman of the Indo American Chamber of Commerce and Manjula Vasanthakumar from Shakthi Knitting Mills were the guests of honour.
