CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi, on Monday, flayed the Centre for its procrastination in the Mullaiperiyar issue due to which tension was escalating on the inter-state border and in Kerala.Addressing his party cadre, who took part in a fast protest at the party headquarters here, the DMK patriarch said that the Centre was remaining a mute spectator to the Mullaiperiyar dispute between both the states.Karunanidhi insisted that the Centre should act immediately and if it failed to do so, it would have to face serious consequences.“Kerala has conspired to convert TN into a Sahara-like desert by destroying its riches by wasting the water. Tamils are not ready to accept such fabricated scheme”, he said.“When the apex court faulted Kerala and issued a direction to increase the storage level to 142 ft from 136 ft, the Kerala’s Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to thwart the order. Now, that Assembly passes another resolution to reduce the level further to 120 ft”, he pointed out.“Is it Assembly or what? Is it a body which can bend to any extent or a body narrower than panchayat?”, Karunanidhi wondered. Keralites, at present, move freely here, and a similar situation should prevail in Kerala, Karunanidhi demanded.Karunanidhi, without mentioning the name of Sohan Roy, the director of the controversial movie Dam999, said that it was unfortunate that he was using his talent to create a rift between the two states.Keralites should set aside their influence over the ensuing byelection there and the lives of Tamils should not be pawned in order to gain political mileage through Mullaiperiyar row. Therefore, the experts, people, farmers and leaders of Kerala should take a decision favouring Tamils.
