CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has rejected the allegations against the management of the World University Service (WUS) Centre in Chetpet, Chennai.The First Bench of the Madras High Court comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, which rejected the allegations, directed the authorities concerned to comply with the suggestions/recommendations of a committee constituted by it and file the compliance report within six weeks. Originally, Dr Kantharaj, former WUS secretary, had filed a public interest writ petition for a direction to the government to take over the management of the WUS to ensure its functioning as per its aims and objects.When the matter came up on April 14 last, the bench found that there had been serious bungling and misappropriation of public money. It constituted a committee consisting of the Inspector General of Registration and the Chief Accounts Officer of the Accountant General of Tamil Nadu to examine all documents, accounts, income and expenditures for the last 10 years. In its report, the committee submitted that there had been no misappropriation or embezzlement of money and the petitioner himself in his statement before it on July 13 said that whatever he had stated in his writ petition was only his apprehension and that he had no other evidence or received any complaint to substantiate his allegations. Holding that there was no mismanagement, the committee made various suggestions/recommendations for improving the functioning of the WUS.Taking these facts into consideration, the bench said that there was no merit in the allegations made by the petitioner. The bench directed the authorities concerned to forthwith comply with the suggestions/recommendations of the committee and file a status report in six weeks.
