New Delhi: World No. 20 Juan Igancio Chela has made it to his very first US Open quarter-finals at the Flushing Meadows in New York. The Argentine started slow against Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland losing the first set 4-6.
Chela then quickly found his rhythm to bounce back and won the next two sets but Warinka fought hard to push the match to the fifth set. However, Chela forced an error from Wawrinka to enter only his second Grand Slam quarter-final.
On the other hand 31-year-old Spain's Carlos Moya booked his place in the US Open quarter-finals defeating unseeded Ernests Gulbis.
Moya's Latvian opponent was inexperienced but fought well to take a set away from the Spaniard. But after losing the third set Moya closed out the match to set up an encounter with Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, who is the first Serbian to reach the last eight of the US Open in the Open era.
Moya won the match 7-5, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
Djokovic was up against a very determined Juan Monaco of Argentina. Though Djokovic won the first two sets, Monaco gave him a tough fight taking away the third. Djokovic won the fourth set and took the match 7-5, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-1.
"Well, you know, I lost two times we played. One was on the clay, and the other was in Cincinnati. So in Cincinnati I really didn't play even, you know, 20% of my game. It was pretty bad match for me. He's a great player. I mean, he's coming back big time, and you can see his results this year," Djokovic said about meeting Moya in the next round.
Men's singles fourth round: Juan Ignacio Chela (20), Argentina, def. Stanislas Wawrinka, Switzerland, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4. Carlos Moya (17), Spain, def. Ernests Gulbis, Latvia, 7-5, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Novak Djokovic (3), Serbia, def. Juan Monaco (23), Argentina, 7-5, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-1.
