KOCHI: 'Kesaco Chess 2012', an interschool and intercollegiate chess tournament jointly organised by the Kerala Social and Consumer Organization (Ernakulam Unit) and Chess Association Ernakulam, will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Vocational Higher Secondary School, Irumpanam, Ernakulam.The tournament, which aims to achieve a record-breaking participation of 1000 students, is aimed at spreading awareness about the need to incorporate chess in school curriculums, said Shibu Malayil, president, Chess Association Kerala. "Children who learn chess at an early age realize the need to plan their actions well in advance. They seldom make hasty decisions. They also learn to expect the unexpected and take life as it comes. Moreover, it will provide  job opportunity to thousands of chess trainers," he added."As on Sunday, we have over 690 registered participants. If we reach the target of 1000 participants, this will be a Guinness World Record," said Shibu.'Kesaco Chess 2012' consists of 4 sections, namely lower primary, upper primary, high school and college. Each section carries 30 prizes including a cash prize of `2,500 and Kesaco Trophy for the individual champions in each section. The total prize fund of the event is `70,000.Three trophies will be given to the schools on the basis of performance. A special trophy will also be given to the school that sends maximum participants. The entry fee is `110 per participant. All the participants will be issued Merit-cum-Participation Certificates.Entries will be accepted at Royal Chess Academy, Kottakkakam, Tripunithura or at the office of Chess Association Ernakulam, Minerva, University road, Kalamassery, Kochi-22. The last day of receipt of entries is Thursday (January 5). Schools can send the list of participants along with the entry fee (DD drawn in favour of Chess Association Ernakulam) by post to the Convener, Kesaco Chess 2012, C/O Royal Chess Academy, Kottakkakam, Tripunithura- 682301 or email the list of participants to [email protected] and remit the entry fee at the venue before 8.30 am on Saturday.
