THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If you are the parent of a marriageable young man or woman who is running after matchmakers and marriage bureaus for finding a suitable partner for your child, here is a word of advice for you. Watch out before you follow the seemingly harmless instructions of the matchmakers. Because, out there thrives a network of several rackets set out to exploit your unadulterated love for your offspring. The arrest of such a matchmaker from the city the other day has exposed the existence such rackets in the city. Even though many have fallen prey to such traitorous matchmakers, they were unwilling to come out in open. But that was past. The city police have launched an intense drive to nail such rackets that are operating in the city, following the arrest of one Anil Kumar, of Kattakkada, who headed such an ‘operation’. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by a government employee, who fell prey to the racket after he approached them for finding a suitable match for his daughter. The complainant said that he approached the marriage bureau ‘Ahalya Mangalya Sahayi’ after seeing a classified advertisement in a leading vernacular news daily a few days ago. He even paid them an amount of Rs 750 as registration fee in return for information on a prospective groom. But only later did he learn that his calls for proposals were being attended by Anil Kumar, posing as the father of a young man. After confirming the treachery, he filed a complaint with the police, who took Anil Kumar into custody. "I did not care about the money I lost. Instead, I felt that such gangs thrived because no one came out in open against them for fear of shame. Hence, I decided to take up the matter,’’ he said.Indeed, his efforts bore success. The Sub Inspector (Crime) of Vanchiyoor Police Station told City Express that more people have now approched them with complaints alleging that they were duped by the same marriage bureau. Ahalya Mangalya Sahayi was a marriage bureau which had its headquarters at Chettikulangara, near Vanchiyoor. The bureau had several agencies across the district and employed over 30 persons. The police have conducted raids on the branches of the marriage bureau and seized computers and several documents. Meanwhile, Anil Kumar was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
