BHUBANESWAR: Yet another spell of pounding rain on Monday saw large parts of Capital’s residential areas, slums and major thoroughfares facing a flood-like situation. Low-lying areas, even those in the heart of the City, were flooded with the storm water entering houses. At some places, vehicles were swept away while denizens were forced to remain indoors. The roof of a house in VIP Colony collapsed during the evening hours injuring four persons a few hours after the heavy showers. Police said the first floor roof of Mayur Art Centre, a dance academy, which was laid recently crumbled. The four injured were given treatment. Earlier in the afternoon, the City was hit by the torrential downpour. The weather office recorded 24-mm rainfall. Storm water gushed down the streets in Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar, Bomikhal, Palasuni, Shatabdi Nagar and other low-lying areas of the City. Even in Shastri Nagar, the roads were flooded. A large stretch of Ram Mandir-Housing Board road was submerged posing problems for students of the Capital High School. With drainage systems either under repair or defunct across the City, the rains exposed the unpreparedness of the civic authorities. Under-repair roads also compounded the misery of the denizens. Mayor Anant Narayan Jena said creation of a new system of drains is underway and would help the City in near future. Besides, the BMC is identifying the encroachers of drains and open spaces which facilitate the run off. Action will be taken against them soon, he asserted. Only a few days back, the City had faced a similar situation following a persistent downpour.
