CHENNAI: A couple of hours after the cyclonic storm Tha-ne crossed the shore between Cuddalore and Puducherry on Friday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa reviewed its impact and allocated Rs150 crore for undertaking immediate relief works and repair. Jayalalithaa has also deputed five ministers to the districts severely affected by the cyclone to undertake the relief works.Expressing deep grief, the CM has also announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the 26 persons who died from cylcone-related incidents.In Cuddalore, 21 persons died while two persons each were killed in Villupuram and Thiruvallur districts. In Chennai, one person died.After the review meeting, the CM directed the Collectors of all coastal districts to estimate the damages caused by Thane and send the reports to the heads of the vari-ous departments. Ministers C Ve Shanmugam, MC Sampath, BV Ramana, TKM Chinnaiya and KA Jeyapaul were deputed to Villupuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, Kanch-ipuram and Nagapattinam districts respectively for monitoring the relief works.Uprooted trees and electric poles have affected traffic. Power supply was disconnected completely in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Nagapattinam districts since Thursday night as a precautionary measure as the cyclone was expected to hit with speeds of 125 kmph. The CM has directed authorities to make sure power supply would resume by Friday evening.Four teams from the National Disaster Management Force have been sent to Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Chennai and Tiruvallur. She said, about 6,000 people living in low-lying areas have been moved to higher ground.
