The Malayalam Copy Writing Department of Bharat Mata College, Thrikkakara, are all set to launch an internet television, Channel BMC, a first-of-its-kind in Arts and Science Colleges in the state on Thursday. It will be inaugurated by Minister for Rural Development and Culture K C Joseph.
Around 25 students with the support of former students of the department took six months to complete the project. The novel venture was conceived by Josy Joseph, head of the department.
“I have been in the media and film field for long and discussed about creating a channel with the students who were full of enthusiasm. The students who passed out and are placed in various organisations offered support and we created the channel within six months,” said Josy. It has been made using free software and required zero investment. The UGC funds were utilised for bettering the lab with better cameras and editing material. Initially it will be used by the students of the department for studies. It will be more practical-oriented with students going out of classrooms with the camera. This will help tap their skills and talents. Moreover, many relevant issues can be discussed and documentaries aired to create more awareness on social issues.
The channel is in the regional language. “We hope to extend the programme to other students of the college,” said Josy.
