BANGALORE: National Conference on Frontiers of Computer Science and technology-FCST’12 was organised by the department of computer science and engineering, Rajarajeswari College of Engineering on their premises recently.  The conference was a forum to share research solutions and identify directions for future research and development in the field of computer science and technology.  One this occasion, A C Shanmugam, chairman of Rajarajeswari Group of Institutions said, “The conference aims to bring out innovative ideas along with discussions about the research challenges in fields of computer science and technology and to share ideas and views with experts.” Addressing the audience, Professor T C Shivashankara Murthy, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, who was the chief guest said, “Between 2005 and 2010, India has published only 16 research papers in top three journals of the world as against USA which has compiled 480, China which has complied 76 papers, South Korea with 46 and 24 by Brazil.” He insisted upon quality and the use of information communication system in the educational institutions. He also added that there is a dearth and the need for quality teachers who encourage and prepare their students to think and research by application of knowledge.  S Malathi, country leader of IBM Software Group, IBM India Private Limited, commenting on the need for quality manpower for the industry, said, “We need people who have the soft skills to apply technical knowledge to interface with their clients and articulate solutions to a problem.”72 out of the 134 technical papers  by students were short listed by the technical committee comprising of senior professors from various institutions for presentation.  The conference covered technical papers of fields on networking, knowledge and data processing, network security and cloud computing and algorithms. The presentations were judged on the basis of originality, implementation and possible results.Professor K R Venugopal, principal of UVCE, Bangalore concluded, “India has a culture which unifies art, science and technology. When it comes to science and technology, we are the best. We have a talented workforce but lack confidence and this is the area we need to work on.”
