KOPPAL: The betting syndicate seems to be very eager on the outcome of the Koppal bypoll though it is not expected to make any decisive difference to either the state government or to any of the political parties in the state. According to sources, Congress and BJP are the bookies’ favourites with very few predicting victory for the JD(S). A senior police officer told Express on Thursday that the situation is being monitored and the betting menace would be cracked even on the slightest lead. Meanwhile, State Chief Electoral Officer C S Suranjan expressed unhappiness at the excise department’s inability in not checking the illegal transport of liquor in Koppal assembly constituency which will go to polls on September 26.Chairing a meeting of officials to review poll preparations here on Thursday, he instructed officials to enhance video surveillance teams from five to eight and step up inspection at all checkposts in the district. On complaints of government employees being involved in poll campaigns, he said that stern measures would be taken in such cases.
