BHUBANESWAR: The Kissan cell of the Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Saturday launched a save farmer campaign against the faulty policies of the Naveen Patnaik Government during the last 12 years. Chairman of the OPCC Kissan Khet Mazdoor Sangha Amiya Kumar Patnaik said that at a meeting organised to mark the 94th anniversary of Indira Gandhi, a decision was taken to collect signatures of one lakh farmers of the State on a memorandum highlighting the anti-farmer policies of the State and submit it to President Pratibha Patil. The memorandum will highlight how the wrong policies of the Government have led to more suicides by the farmers. The save farmers movement will be launched across the State in the near future, Patnaik said. Criticising the State Government for its inaction in preventing farmers’ suicides, Patnaik alleged that the State has also failed to take benefit out of the welfare schemes launched by the Centre. Schemes for the welfare of the farmers are not being implemented by the Government, he added. Patnaik said that farmers are living in great anxiety as the State Government is handing over precious land and water resources to companies for rapid industrialisation ignoring the agriculture sector. The save farmers movement will demand that the State Government take steps to identify real problems of farmers and announce policy to check suicides. The signature collection for the memorandum started on Saturday from a village in Balianta block near Bhubaneswar.Balianta block Kissan Congress committee president Dinesh Nayak, senior leader Santosh Mohanty, general secretary of the kissan cell Ashok Sahu and Balianta block Congress president Bipin Patra were present.
