Congress farmers wing lauds Chief Minister

The farmers’ wing of the Congress here has welcomed the decision of Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, to release water from Mettur dam and has insisted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh must take steps for release of water from Karnataka government.

State deputy president of the party, ‘Puliyur’ Nagarajan, in a statement here lauded the Chief Minister and said that she was working for the interests of the delta farmers on the water issue. He said kuruvai cultivation was affected in Tamil Nadu due to Karnataka’s refusal to release water during the summer.

The Chief Minister had boldly announced that water would be released for samba crops on September 17, raising the hopes of farmers.

Nagarajan pointed out that lower riparian States throughout the world were being given priority in using river water, and traditional ayacuts that were carrying out cultivation for a long time were being given preference.

“The Prime Minister should intervene in the issue and convene the Cauvery River Authority meet. He should direct Karnataka to release Cauvery water as per the tribunal’s interim verdict,” he said.

He also appealed to the Union Ministers and MPs from Tamil Nadu to meet the Prime Minister and insist him to take steps for water release from Karnataka.
