MACHILIPATNAM: Supporters of MLA Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani) organised a rasta roko here on Thursday demanding that the Bandar port development project works be grounded by August 20.It is learnt that Nani wrote a letter to the Assembly Speaker a few days ago giving an ultimatum to the state government that he would quit his MLA post if the port works were not grounded by August 20.A copy of the undated letter written by the MLA to the speaker was released to the media by his supporters here. However, the Bandar Port Sadhana Samithi which has been organising a relay fast for the past 240 days to press for its demand, said it was not aware of Nani’s ultimatum to the government. But some political observers are of the view that Nani gave the ultimatum to quit the post, only to join YSR Congress Party during the Kadapa MP’s visit toBandar in the last week of August as part of his Odarpu Yatra to Krishna district. It may be noted here that Nani took an active part in the agitation for Bandar port and brought pressure on former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy to lay the foundation stone for it in 2008. Expressing concern over undue delay in grounding the port works, he planned to leave the party. Following an assurance from chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy that he would ensure the port project works were grounded at the earliest, he gave up his move. However, Nani’s followers at his office are reluctant to comment on the issue. The MLA who is said to be in Hyderabad, is not available for his comments on his ultimatum.
