These included infrastructure projects, eco-friendly and commercial projects and highway construction.Speaking on the occasion, the Governor called for progress in the construction industry. “However, safeguarding the environment should be the prime agenda,” he said, adding that young and emerging civil engineers have the responsibility of planning ‘green’ structures.He pointed out that the sector, in infrastructure development, ranks fourth in the nation and 84th worldwide.“Modern-day construction involves creating mega structures that can showcase the beauty and creativity of the human intellect. Ready mix concrete, for instance, has revolutionised the concept of introducing high performance concrete for tall buildings.” He expressed confidence that the construction industry will be geared up to compete on an equal footing in the global arena shortly.Secretary of Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) T Chitty Babu said that India lacks about 26 million homes. “Tamil Nadu ranks second when it comes to shortage of houses among Indian states,” he added. Pitching for transparency in clearances for constructions, he stated that the government and builders must unite to solve the housing crisis.Another speaker, Professor A R Santhakumar, former emeritus professor at IIT-Madras, averred that quality promotion is the need of the hour. Acknowledging the vast transformation in construction methodologies, he stressed on proper waste utilisation and noise reductions at the site.
