KOCHI: It seems the Kochi Corporation is not aware of the fact that road construction could not be carried out during monsoon. The Corporation, without any hesitation, is blaming the climate for the delay in carrying out the work. The Corporation is still waiting for the ‘sun to smile’ to start the work on the damaged city roads. The Corporation had announced that the repair of the Rajaji Road would start on Thursday. Though materials and machines were mobilised, the Corporation could not keep its word and the Mayor is blaming the monsoon for the delay.“Everything was arranged so that work could be started on Thursday. But the rain on Wednesday night sabotaged our plan,” said Mayor Tony Chammany. He further said he was not sure as to when the work could be started. The maintenance work on city roads should have been completed earlier. However, some of the work was undertaken only a few months ago. The authorities then promised to take up major works, including retarring, but nothing happened. The strike by Corporation contractors was also another reason for the delay in road repair. The Works Standing committee has already submitted a list of 13 roads to the PWD. They include the Karshaka Road, Durbar Hall Road, Hospital Road and Pottakkuzhi Road. The civic body is also pinning its hopes on the Kerala Roads and Bridges Development Corporation which has been entrusted with the renovation of the Thammanam-Pulleppady Road. The RBDCK is expected to start work soon.“The PWD is expected to start the renovation works before Onam,” said a top Corporation Official.
