THIRUVANANTHAPURAM(KERALA): Two days after calling Jesus Christ ‘a liberation warrior’ who took on the mighty Roman empire, the CPM fell into a controversy by personifying him as US President Barack Obama, the biggest apostle of capitalism and imperialism which drew flak from all political parties including the LDF partners.Reacting to the big brother’s act, CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan said, “This is an unwanted controversy hurting the sentiments of the believers. Portraying Jesus as a liberator was a right step forward as all Communists regard him as one. But this will not help the movement politically.“It is good that if Pinarayi disowned the flex board,” Chandrappan told Express.KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala described it as ridiculous. “They have portrayed Last supper in a repulsive manner,” he said.“It shows the degeneration of CPM,” said Muslim league general Secretary K P A Majeed. “They used the same trick during the Malappuram state conference where they displayed photos of Muslim leaders to sneak into the Muslim vote bank,” he said.Socialist Janata (Democratic) state president M P Veerendra Kumar blamed the CPM leadership. “It cannot be seen as an act without the knowledge of the leadership. Pinarayi Vijayan disowned it only for it backtracked,” he said. “Christianity is a noble philosophy which should not be used for cheap and dirty political gains,” he said obviously hinting at the Piravom by-elections. Government chief whip P C George wondered, “What happened to the CPM to act like this. This shows the real fascist face of the party and the frantic attempt by the party to woo the sections that keep away from it.”
