THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Decrying the High Court verdict sentencing CPM state committee member M V Jayarajan to six months imprisonment in the contempt of court case as ‘unfortunate and a denial of natural justice,’ CPM state secretariat on Tuesday said that it was high time to review the very nature of contempt of court. The party secretariat said in a statement here that it was the same people, who acted as complainants, gathered evidence and delivered the verdict. The secretariat said that it was against the basic principles of the Constitution to punish those who raise voice for the people’s fundamental rights. The contempt of court was charged against Jayarajan for his controversial statement criticising the court for banning wayside public meetings. The CPM said that the fight would be continued till the right to assemble on the wayside was achieved. It has been pointed out that the Assembly had unanimously enacted a piece of legislation in this regard. Instead of giving a symbolic punishment, the court sentenced him to six months imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000. The right to file an appeal in the apex court was also denied. Against this backdrop the verdict is improper, the party statement said.
