Hyderabad’s famed lakes, which sport an unfriendly damp green cover nowadays, will soon get back their watery exteriors, thanks to an indigenous machine developed by technical minds residing in villages. The machine, which is the answer to the two lake cleaning machines currently being employed by the HMDA, will not just reduce operation costs, but can also operate on water bodies with shallow depth and rocky floors, something which the HMDA operated machines are not capable of.Pilot project a successT Ratna Joseph, chief entomologist, Urban Malaria Scheme with the GHMC, sounded optimistic as he mentioned the success of the machines in the pilot test level. “We used the machines to clear the Kumarigunta Lake in Circle 3 and Shahtan Talab in Circle 7 off the prevalent water hyacinth cover. The test was indeed successful and now our engineering department has floated the tender to start cleaning bigger lakes in the city,” he said. The test project cost just `4 lakh and `2 lakh respectively, and both the lakes are now as good as new, at least in appearance. “The toughest part is in the initial cleaning of existing pollution. After that maintenance is much easier, ,” he added. L Vandana Kumar, additional commissioner (Health and Sanitation), explained that with the success of the test project, focus would be on cleaning the bigger lakes, with the HMDA tank near Langar Houz being lined up first as per plan.
