Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda has, through an order, overrode the new rule made by the management of Kukke Subrahmanya College in Subrahmanya, disallowing burkhas on the campus.
The DC’s order said girl students should be allowed to wear burkhas on the campus as they did earlier.
The college management banned girl students of the Muslim community from wearing burkhas on the campus from September 22.
After the new rule came into force, the students had to remove their burkhas outside the college, either in the nearest bus stand or on the roadside, before entering the campus.
Fifteen Muslim girls out of the 680 students had to follow this order.
According to college principal Dinesh Kamath, earlier the students were allowed to wear burkhas on the campus, but not inside classrooms.
They removed the religious headdress in the ladies restroom before entering classrooms, he said.
He said the Deputy Commissioner’s orders, which was orally conveyed to him at a meeting, needed to followed as he had all powers.
“I have conveyed the DC’s order to the heads of the management committee,” he said.
However, college management committee president Krishnaprasad Madthila said they had not received orders in writing.
The management would decide its action after receiving orders
