BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to silence his critics in the party, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday struck by suspending former minister Debasis Nayak from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for indulging in anti-party activities.Announcing the action against Nayak, Naveen told mediapersons that there will be no more suspension for the time being. A two-line order was later issued by the party. Though partymen were waiting for the developments throughout the day, Naveen announced the decision after a function to inaugurate the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Institute in the evening. Naveen does not generally talk over mobile phone during functions. But today, he was seen talking to somebody over phone when the function was going on. Soon after it was over, he announced Nayak’s suspension. Nayak was, however, not available for his reaction.  During the last one week, Nayak was highly critical of Naveen’s style of working saying that there is no democratic functioning in the BJD. Pointing out the number of scams during the third term, the former minister alleged that corruption existed at all levels of the Government.  Nayak had also pointed accusing finger at Pyarimohan Mohapatra, describing him as the real power centre. The party and Government are controlled by Mohapatra, he said. Nayak was highly critical of the party leadership after the ministry reshuffle. Former minister Damodar Rout, who was dropped in the latest ministry reshuffle, had also described Mohapatra as the power centre in the BJD and Naveen as the executing authority. However, Rout had not touched issues of scams and corruption in the Government. The Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) and the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) have welcomed the action against Nayak. BYJD general secretary Bijay Nayak said that the former minister wanted to create differences between the Chief Minister and Pyarimohan Mohapatra by giving misleading statements.
