New Delhi: According to nationwide reports on Friday, the death toll due to dengue has gone up to 135. Over 170 fresh cases were reported, taking the total number of those who have been afflicted to 6910.
Two men, aged 23 and 68 years, and a 15-year-old girl died in two hospitals in Delhi raising the toll due to the mosquito-borne infection to 48 while 88 fresh cases were detected, health officials said. With this, the national capital has accounted for 1908 cases, the country's highest.
Three persons died due to dengue in Andhra Pradesh increasing the toll there to 11 while one person succumbed to the disease in Rajasthan claiming a total of 12 lives in the state, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), which is monitoring the infection spread, said.
As temperatures fell in the northern region, a NVBDCP official said if the rains continue and the mercury goes down below 24 degrees celsius, there will be decline in the breeding of dengue vector, Aedes mosquito. Breeding of the mosquito halts below 16 to 18 degrees celsius, he said.
With reports of 170 new cases, the total number of people who have suffered from the infection country-wide has risen to 6910, the official said.
Mosquitoes, transmitting dengue and chikungunya, cannot survive in cold temperature, NVBDCP chief P L Joshi said, adding "the transmission of the viral thus comes to an end".
Joshi said "there has been a slight decline in the number of cases, but it would take another week to confirm the trend".
Chandigarh, which was free of dengue in 2003 and 2004, has reported 78 cases including two who are in a critical condiction, a hospital official from there said. It had just two cases last year.
Joshi said the government has already released Rs 22 crore to the dengue and chikungunya states to undertake awareness and preventive measures.
Kerala has reported 834 cases and four deaths, while Rajasthan has reported 838 patients and 12 deaths.
In West Bengal, 600 people have been affected by the virus while four have died. Uttar Pradesh has reported 510 cases and 13 deaths. In Gujarat, 456 people have taken ill due to dengue while three persons have succumbed.
In Punjab, 413 people have been afflicted by the disease with four deaths and in Tamil Nadu, 307 cases have been reported with one death.
While Haryana has reported 232 cases and two deaths, Karnataka registered 92 dengue patients and a toll of seven.
Eleven persons have died due to dengue in Andhra Pradesh where 60 cases have been confirmed this year. After Delhi, Maharashtra has registered the maximum dengue deaths at 22 and 582 cases.
