V Dinesh Reddy will continue as the director-general of police (DGP) in the state. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy took a decision to this effect on Saturday after receiving a panel of three names from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
According to sources, chief secretary Minnie Mathew had attended a meeting convened by UPSC in Delhi on Friday, after which the names of three senior IPS officers, including Dinesh Reddy, was sent to the state government. The chief minister then picked Dinesh Reddy for the post.
Earlier, the government had sent a list of eight officers to the UPSC which included P Gautam Kumar (1975 batch), Umesh Kumar and V Dinesh Reddy (both 1977 batch), Ashok Prasad, TP Das, Aruna Bahuguna, B Prasada Rao and SA Huda (all 1979 batch). However, Gautam Kumar formally retired from service this week.
Dinesh Reddy was made in-charge DGP after the Supreme Court had refused to grant a stay on the AP High Court order which upheld the verdict of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) quashing his appointment as the DGP.
The UPSC undertook an elaborate exercise before shortlisting the panel. In fact, it had sought details pertaining to the service record of all the eight IPS officers from the officers themselves instead of referring to the state government for it.
