ERODE : The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids at the houses of former handloom minister and DMK district secretary N K K P Raja and relatives at 10 different places in the State. The raids that began at 7 am were conducted based on charges against the ex-minister that he amassed wealth disproportionate to known sources of income.Raja’s residence at Selvam Nagar on the Perundurai Road here where he lives with his wife Uma Maheshwari was raided by a 10-member team, led by Erode DSP Murugesan. Meanwhile, other teams searched the houses of his first wife Parimala at Kavundapadi, Parimala’s father Sababathi at Avarangattur, near Kavundapadi and his father and ex-minister N K K Periyasamy at Appakudal, near Bhavani. The officials also held an inquiry at the residence of Uma’s brother Selvamuthukumar at Karur Sengunthapuram. The houses of Raja’s friend and bus operator S S S Saravanan at Chidambaram Colony in Periyar Nagar and that of his relative Murthy at Kalingarayanpalayam in Bhavani were also raided. The premises of the Barathidasan College, owned by Raja’s family members, at Ellispet near Kavundapadi was also raided.The DVAC sleuths held an inquiry at the house of college treasurer Murugan at Sanjai Nagar near the Collectorate and raided Raja’s house at Shenoy Nagar in Chennai. While the DVAC teams wrapped up the proceeding in all these areas before evening, the raid at Raja’s house here went on till late evening.Around 4 pm, Murugesan and Inspector Rajesh came out of the house, only to return hurriedly. Later, a car with some officials and Uma was seen leaving the house. Police sources indicated that the sleuths wanted to inspect Uma’s jewellery kept in a locker at an SBI branch. At eight spots, the police did not allow anyone to enter the premises when the raids were on.
