Protesting against the use of police force on people agitating against a proposed nuclear power plant in Koodankulam, student organisations at the English and Foreign Languages University on Wednesday burnt the effigy of home minister Susheel Kumar Shinde and took out a rally from Osmania University Arts College to EFLU campus.
“We also condemn the Tamil Nadu state government for using force to suppress the movement and spread rumors that the safety of the plant is clarified,” said student leaders of the All India Students’ Federation, Dalit Adivasi Bahujan Minority Students Association and Progressive Democratic Students’ Union. Students had gathered in large numbers with placards and posters against the nuclear power plant and shouted slogans while burning the effigy. Demanding a public debate over the safety and future of nuclear power plants, they said, “we join hands with anti-corruption crusader Arvind Kejrival about the need for a public debate. Development projects have been forcefully displacing a large number of minority population. We as citizens of India demand the central government explain if they are ready to take the responsibility of any mishap in future.”
They alleged that all the political parties had joined hands against the masses. “We have seen such suppression in all people’s movements especially while constructing dams. We would strongly support the people in Kudankulam,” said Mohan Dharavath, president DABMSA.
Echoing similar views, Kota Rajesh of the PDSU asked, “What is the assurance that the plant would survive natural calamities like an earthquake? The impact would be unimaginable. We do not want another Fukushima.”
