KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that measures would be taken to collect and utilise the welfare fund share from the owners. The activities of the Welfare Board will be improved at the earliest, he said. He was speaking at a function organised to felicitate INTUC leader Elsebius Master on his 80th birthday on Sunday. He said that the labourers working in this sector had always been risking their lives. Keeping this in view, the government will safeguard their life as well as property.“History cannot repudiate the role of Elsebius Master who has been struggling all his life to put the lives of the workers at a pedestal where they can fight for their rights,” KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said while inaugurating the function organised under the aegis of Kerala Kettida Nirmana Thozhilali Congress (KKNTC) at the Town Hall here on Sunday. “Though there are many organisations for the labourers, the role played by Master and KKNTC was laudable and remarkable,” he said.He said that a government-level discussion including trade union representatives should be organised to formulate a construction policy in the state to improve the living conditions of the construction workers. “The KPCC will put pressure on the Welfare Board to accelerate the activities of the board,” he said. “We have been receiving petitions seeking solutions to the problems experienced in the construction sector. The unavailability of construction materials to quite an extent is a reason. Besides it, many environmental problems being raised by the locals are also affecting the sector. Giving bonus to the construction workers is also under consideration,” he added.Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K V Thomas, Excise Minister K Babu, UDF convener P P Thankachan, K P Dhanaplan MP, Charles Dias MP, Mayor Tony Chammani, Benny Behnan MLA, Dominic Presentation MLA, Ludy Louis MLA, Hibi Eden MLA were among others who were present on the occasion.
