Exhibition on epigraphy held

In commemoration of its 150th year celebrations, the Archaeological Survey of India, the CP Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation and the the Deputy Superintending Epigraphist, Southern Zone, organised an exhibition on ‘Scripts of India’.

Dr K Karuppiah, Assistant Superintending Epigraphist, ASI, said, “ASI was started in 1861. Throughout the nation, ASI is organising various programmes. To sensitise more people to epigraphy, we have organised this exhibition.” He added, “Epigraphy is the basic source material for history and culture among other things. But in many villages, people are not aware of the importance of such inscriptions. We hope that such exhibitions create an awareness about these basic sources that are available.”

The exhibition includes photographs of Raja Raja Cholan’s inscriptions, Uthiramerur inscriptions on the  Kudavolai system, inscriptions of the 520 sq. ft. Thirumukkudal, which is considered Asia’s largest inscription, slice stone inscriptions, among others.

The exhibition is on till August 11.
