TIRUPUR: A former village panchayat president of Merkupathi village was arrested by the police on Sunday for hoarding 33 domestic LPG cylinders at his residence. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Avinashi ASP Vijayanda Arya and a team of Civil Supply CID Department including inspector Kennady, SI Ganesan and Head Constable Kandhasamy, conducted a surprise inspection at the farmhouse of Palanisamy, 54, in Merkupathy village. Palanisamy’s wife Banumati is the president of the panchayat at present.Around 2 am on Sunday, the team inspected the house and found 33 domestic LPG cylinders. Police seized all the cylinders along with 124 gas registration books of the villagers, besides 16 bottles of brandy and eight bottles of beer from his house. Further investigation revealed that Palanisamy used to book the refill cylinders from the names of villagers and sell them at a much higher cost. Police arrested him immediately along with his aides Gobu, 23, and Parveen, 21. The Civil Supply CID police registered a case. Meanwhile the Perumanallur police also registered a case against Palanisamy for illegally possessing liquor.After conducting similar raids, the Civil Supply CID police arrested three more persons including Sankar from Kunnathur, Ganesan from Thoravalur and Subramani from Kunnathur on the charges of possessing domestic LPG cylinders illegally while using it for commercial purpose.
