THRISSUR: The explosives wing team headed by Controller of Explosives K Sundaresan and Deputy Controller Rajesh Kumar Singh Chauhan inspected the site of the explosion at the fireworks manufacturing unit at Athani here on Wednesday. Sundaresan said: “There are two regulatory standards for fireworks units. The first type of licence is for storing 15 kilograms of explosives. The license for this is issued by the Additional District Magistrate. The second type of licence is to store 2,000 kilograms of explosives. For this they have to obtain a licence from the Explosives Controller’s office.” Upon inspection it was found that the unit had flouted regulation regarding the storage of ammunition. For such a huge impact to have taken place, the volume stored would have been much higher than that is specified in the regulatory standards, he said.“While we regret the incident, such a sensitive occupation demands a certain level of self- responsibility and regulation. I, for one, have visited most of the nuclear plants in the country.”“The guidelines set for such plants are followed to the minutest detail. We do not need to read all the rules in the book to know that our hand will be lost if we touch a live wire without precautionary measures. It is pure common sense. It is unfortunate that the fireworks manufacturing units are given licence to keep ammunition and handle it in a careless manner,” Sundaresan said.Since the incident took place at a remote location, upon a hillock, the human casualties were limited, he said.
