New Delhi: A local Congress leader allegedly involved in the murder of a Shiv Sena worker was stripped and beaten to death in a Maharashtra village at a political meeting held in the run-up to a district council by-election on Friday.
Dnyaneshwar Sathwane, a former vice president of the Nagpur district council, was lynched in Tarsa village near Nagpur.
Maharashtra PWD Minister Anil Deshmukh, who was an eyewitness to the incident, says his party workers and the police could do little to help.
"There was a threat to Mr Sathole from Sena leaders. When we had gone to Mowda to hold election rally, Shiv Sena leaders attacked and killed him. The moment I completed my address, about 200-300 people entered the pandal and caught hold of Sathe and started beating him. Our workers and police tried to rescue but 200-300 Shiv Sainiks were there. Police is taking action and has arrested 18 culprits,” he said.
