Family shocked, wedding called off

CHENNAI: Sundarapandian’s grandson’s wedding, scheduled for Tuesday at his village in Tirunelveli, has been cancelled after Sunday’s accident, relatives of the deceased said.Ponvel of Nesapakkam, one of Sundarapandian’s brothers-in-law, last spoke to him on Friday over the phone when they discussed the wedding. “He had a heart ailment and his wife had her eye operated on. Theirs was one big happy family living in the same house,” he said.Only Sundarapandian’s friend of 25 years, Varadhan knew of the trip to the lake. “His son Asirvadham was adamant about taking the trip though he had even fought with him over it as Sundarapandian had lived in Pazhaverkadu for some years and knew about the lake,” he said. Varadhan saw his friend that morning when he distributed cakes and biriyani to all for Christmas.Sundarapandian’s brother- in-law Aruputharaj of Nesapakkam said he hailed from Ittamozhi in Tirunelveli.The family settled in Gummidipoondi two decades ago. Sundarapandian was running a hotel and grocery shop on either side of the Chennai- Kolkatta National Highway at Gummidipoondi.
