New Delhi: Defending champions Mahindra United were knocked out of the 28th Peerless Federation Cup in the semi-finals by Sporting Clube de Goa (SCG) on Tuesday.
The club from Goa beat the jeepmen 1-0 thanks to a Dudu Omagbemi strike to enter the final at Kolkata.
Dudu headed SCG into the lead in the 72nd minute off a Nicholas Rodrigues freekick under the floodlights at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Dudu standing unmarked in the box headed in the ball that gave no chance to goalkeeper Sandip Nandy.
SCG was also the better team and carried out several raids on Mahindra United while the defending champions found it hard to counter the Goan club.
Mahindra also lost one player when N S Manju received his second yellow card for bringing down Dudu in the 89th minute.
With Dudu and Earnest Jeremiah teaming up in the attack with great cohesion. Mahindra defenders could do little.
And their defensive strategy backfired as SCG controlled the midfield which ultimately proved to be decisive.
