At least five people were killed and one injured while 150 persons were left homeless due to floods in northwest Pakistan, rescue officials said. Heavy floods have killed five in mountainous district of Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, they said on Friday.
Incessant rains flooded canals here and its adjoining areas destroying around a dozen of houses in Hayatabad and Regi areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), officials added. Four people have been reported injured in the incidents, they said, adding that rescue operations are underway at Budni Nullah on the outskirts of Peshawar which inundated many adjacent low lying areas.
Around 150 local people have been shifted to safe places. The Military Authorities, on the request of the KPK government, have provided motor boats for evacuating stranded people along Budni Nullah. A flood monitoring room has been established in corps headquarters to monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance to public, said officials.
Peshawar Commissioner has declared emergency in Hayatabad and Regi areas, located at the bank of river Warsak and directed residents to move to safe places. The Meteorological Department on Friday forecast scattered rain with thundershowers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Upper Punjab during next 24 hours that will hopefully bring the temperature down.
