Jalpaiguri: The Food and Essential Supplies Minister Jyotiprio Mullick on Sunday visited the closed Raipur tea garden where six labourers died of malnutrition in the last one week.

Admitting that they died of malnutrition, Mullick said, "The workers of the closed tea garden will get good quality rice from FCI. One inspector will supervise the distribution of food grains to the workers of three closed gardens."

Six persons, including two children, died of malnutrition in Raipur tea garden in the past seven days due to lack of steady supply of quality foodgrains, Seema Halder, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Jalpaiguri had said.

The tea garden is lying closed since 2003.

The minister handed over Rs 5,000 each to the family members of the tea garden workers who died of malnutrition.

The tea gardens in remote areas are lying closed and the workers have no opportunity to earn money to buy enough food grains.

Most of these tribal tea garden workers are suffering from severe malnutrition as they wait for the government supply through ration shops, officials said.
