S S Virk, who is under arrest for corruption, will stay in a Chandigarh hospital.

Chandigarh: A court on Tuesday sent S S Virk, former director general of Punjab Police, to 15 days of judicial custody in a disproportionate assets case.

Virk will remain at a government hospital in Chandigarh where he is being treated for high BP. Virk was arrested in Delhi on Sunday for allegedly owning assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, misusing his powers and harbouring an offender (a former terrorist Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi).

The Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday told the district magistrate’s court in Mohali that Virk be sent to judicial custody, as he was hospitalised after arrest and the police could not interrogate him.

Virk is reportedly suffering from cancer and various other ailments. The court reiterated that he should only be questioned after obtaining permission from doctors attending on him and in the presence of his lawyers.

The bureau would seek Virk's police remand by filing an application at a later date after the 1970 batch Maharashtra cadre officer was fit to face interrogation after discharge from PGI Chandigarh.

Virk was the chief of Punjab Police during Congress leader Amarinder Singh’s tenure as Chief Minister and was removed on the Election Commission’s order before the state assembly elections in February.
