CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday did some plainspeaking about the schemes of her government that benefit the poor and needy, through which she was fulfilling her electoral promises. Speaking about the distribution of several articles free-of-cost to economically weak sections of society, the Chief Minister said these were ‘essential needs of the poor’ and clarified that their distribution could not be considered a permanent solution.“It is the ambition of my government to raise the standard of living of the people in such a way that they should stand on their own to attain economic independence, without depending on the government for their essential needs,” the Chief Minister said while delivering her Independence day address after unfurling the Tricolour on the ramparts of Fort St George.Jayalalithaa added: “The best economic concept means people of all classes should acquire self-sufficiency for all the essential needs of life. In order to fulfil the essential needs of the people, our government is distributing some items free-of-cost. Such things should not be termed freebies. It is the duty of the welfare state to safeguard the interest of the poor by distributing things at no cost.”Jayalalithaa said “only a well-governed democratic government can provide all facilities to poor families on par with the well to do. Many schemes have been introduced and are being implemented for the welfare of the people, particularly the poor, by my government after I took over as the Chief Minister of the Tamil Nadu for the third time.”
