New York: Here’s some good news for music lovers. A new online music company has signed an agreement with the Universal Music Group to make a huge selection of Universal's songs available for free downloads in the US and Canada.
The company, SpiralFrog, says it would support downloads with advertisement and is attempting to wean young people away from illegal downloads.
Analysts say it would offer a major challenge to Apple Computer's successful iTunes which offers download of songs for 99 cents each.
SpiralFrog will offer users of its no-cost web-based service the ability to legally download music by world's most popular award winning artistes, quality songs and music videos, the company said.
The download will be in client-server controlled architecture with no viruses or spyware, SpiralFrog said.
Analysts are watching the new experiment very closely to see if the company can survive but agree it would offer tough competition to the sites which offer music downloads at cost.
The company says digital rights management technology is built in all audio and video content as a part of the measure the company and its partners are taking to address the issue of piracy.
Its research reveals that consumers are "more than willing to pay" for their content by watching non-intrusive, contextually-relevant, targeted advertising in an online entertainment environment where advertising is already a part of the overall experience, it added.
