CHENNAI: An eight-year-old girl, who was returning home from school, died in a freak accident while attempting to get out of a running auto she was travelling in at Madhvaram police limits on Friday. The auto driver was arrested.Police said Anandhi of Konimedu, Redhills, a class three student, along with her friend asked the driver Abdul Salim, 29, from Annanagar, for a lift. They had to sit on either side of Salim as the auto was delivering water cans. When the auto began moving, Anandhi saw another friend of hers walking near Pothur main road. She requested the driver if he could give her friend a lift as well. The driver refused since there was no space in the auto. She then asked the driver to stop the vehicle so she could accomany her friend home. Police sources said by the time the driver could bring his vehicle to a stop by the road side, Anandhi opened the auto’s door to get out. She lost her balance and fell. She sustained head injuries and died enroute hospital. Madhavaram police, who registered a case, arrested Salim. “There is space only for the driver and not for passengers. But the driver gave the children a lift. It’s because of his negligence that the girl fell and died. So, we have arrested him,” said a traffic police official.
