Mysore: Down south, Dussehra is celebrated to glorify the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari over demon King, Mahishasura.
Situated atop one of the eight most sacred hills in the south is Goddess Chamundeshwari's abode in Mysore.
The temple is a must-visit during the auspicious Navratri celebrations. The Goddess is believed to have fought nine demons for nine nights before she killed the demon king Mahishasura.
"The temple is established by Makrandaya Maharshi. After Tipu's time, the Maharajas used to celebrate Navratri at this temple. Now the government is doing the same. People of all religions and castes are allowed inside the temple and there is no discrimination of any kind," says the Chief Priest at Chamundeshwari Temple, Shashi Shekar Dixit.
The Goddess is given a makeover every day each symbolising the demon she defeated and the weapons she used.
Legend has it that the Goddess vanquished the demon king, Mahisashura at this exact place. Story apart, the Goddess is a source of inspiration for woman of the modern day to fight the modern day Mahishasura.
