New Delhi: On May 26, CNN-IBN showed the plight of 20-year-old Dharmendra who was lying unattended in the lawns of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital caught in the impasse between the striking doctors and the Government.
"By the time doctor's call off the strike my son might die. Why is there an emergency ward if they can't take care of patients," Dharmendra's mother, Chinta Devi said.
The cry of this distressed mother made just a few days ago hasn’t fallen upon deaf ears.
Chinta Devi came all the way to Delhi from a village in Bihar for her son Dharmender's treatment for his gangrene-affected foot. However, the doctors' strike made it impossible for her to get him treated.
But on Wednesday, Dharmender was admitted to AIIMS, the epicentre of the anti-reservation protests.
He will be undergoing an amputation surgery on his left foot. His case has been taken up by two doctors who will not be charging a penny for the treatment.
“His leg is in a bad shape and in order to save his life amputation is the only option,” Dr ChandraShekhar Yadav said.
Now, Chinta Devi has also come to terms with her son’s condition. “Doctor's say they won’t be able to save his leg but at least he will survive now,” Chinta Devi said.
It’s not just the AIIMS doctors who came forward to help Chinta Devi and her son. Earlier, Srikanth Mangayyari, an engineering student in the US, on vacation in Hyderabad, travelled all the way to Delhi to help Dharmender after watching his plight on CNN-IBN.
"When I saw Dharmendra's condition on CNN-IBN, I thought I could do something for him," Srikanth said.
And so he did. Following Srikanth's gesture, there was a deluge of emails from other concerned citizens as well, proving that a little help can go a long way.
