The BJP government tabled the Karnataka Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill 2012 in Legislative Council on Wednesday.
The Bill allows regularisation of unauthorised constructions that came up before January on the government lands, excluding those in urban local bodies. The move, however, was criticised by the Opposition parties Congress and JD(S).
The Bill was tabled by Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister K S Eshwarappa.
Leader of Opposition S R Patil said, “This is being done keeping elections in mind and we suspect the government’s intention behind bringing in the legislation.”
According to Basavaraj Horatti of JD(S), the move was a part of the BJP’s election preparation.
Former law minister and JD(S) member M C Nanaiah took the government to task for bringing in the Bill. “The government had constituted a committee headed by IAS officer V Balasubramanian to look into encroachments of government lands. The Committee had recommended that 17 lakh acres of government land, including 5 lakh acres of forest land were encroached in the state. Based on the recommendations, the government even formed district level task forces under deputy commissioners to recover the lands,” Nanaiah said.
The Bill may even be put to vote in the House on Thursday.
Kalakappa’s reply rejected
Women and Child Development Minister Kalakappa Bandi’s reply on the alleged incident of female infanticide in Gulbarga was rejected by members of Legislative Council on Wednesday.
In reply to a Calling Attention Notice submitted by the Congress member Allam Prabhu Patil on the issue of alleged sale of girl child and female infanticide, Bandi read the measures that were planned to discourage such incidents in Konchavaram village in Chincholi taluk in Gulbarga district.
