HYDERABAD: Soon you could walk into your nearest ward office, not to file an application, but rather to pump iron, walk the treadmill and get fighting fit, all at one-tenth the cost of what you would pay otherwise in a private gym, thanks to GHMC’s latest initiative. The corporation has issued a directive to every corporator in the twin cities to set up public gyms in their respective wards, aiming to bring alive near extinct gym spaces in a few ward offices and install new equipments in remaining others, keeping the need to provide options for improved public health as top priority.“The proposal has been lying idle on paper for quite some time. But now we have decided to provide `2 lakh to very corporator to buy necessary equipment and set up gyms within their respective ward limits,” said Mohammed Majid Hussain, Mayor, GHMC. The corporation has already sent each corporator a list of 33 gym machines, from which they can select accordingly, keeping both the budget cap in mind and the usefulness of the machines for optimum usage by both public and employees alike. “The tender process will start once the list is finalised by the corporators. Floor space to set up such gyms is available in every ward in Hyderabad in the form of community halls, ward offices, etc. The corporators only have to put their mind into it. We are releasing funds for the same,” added the Mayor. Though the GHMC has not put forward any deadline for finalising the list of required equipment, the gyms once ready, will be open for public use, unlike the present gym located in the ground floor of the GHMC building which is open only to corporation employees. The Mayor also mentioned that the corporation backed gyms would be public friendly in terms of expense as well. “Gyms elsewhere charge `500-600 minimum per month from users. Such high amounts discourage youngsters and other people who wish to avail such facilities to stay in shape. Our gyms will help them stay healthy at prices as low as `50-100.”
