BANGALORE : British Formula 1 McLaren Mercedes team driver Lewis Hamilton on Tuesday stepped on the gas to vroom, zoom and send more than 15,000 fans into a frenzy on a midi F1 400-metre race track on Nice Road on Tuesday morning. The 26-year-old Hamilton zipped, turned and twisted in his F1 MP4-23 car, which won him his maiden F1 World Championship in 2008. After a few laps, Hamilton drove along side some of the winners of the contest in hot laps, organised by Vodafone — the official sponsors — in a Mercedes AMG. He was virtually mobbed as he drove the F1 car a second time for the benefit of latecomers. People even got onto the tracks forcing Hamilton to stop and then drive away. Apart from swaying the car zig-zag and going in circles with the front wheel locked while rear tyres turned rapidly emitting thick smoke, Hamilton displayed some breathtaking stunts, including back-up spin over (reversing, tucking around and straightening) with a deafening sound.“I’ve visited India many times and it’s never been more exciting to be here than now. The inaugural Indian Grand Prix is only weeks away and you can feel people’s growing passion and the excitement levels continuing to build,” he said.“There’s no better way to experience F1 than up-close, so I think today’s event was a huge success. Next month’s Indian Grand Prix is going to be a fantastic event for our sport, but also for all Indians, who are very passionate about sport. Through Vodafone, I think this is going to be an experience of a lifetime,” he added.
